But not every metric in your analytics tool is automatically a ranking factor in Google Search. This guide explains what click-through rate, bounce rate and time on site can tell you, where they fall short, and how to use them to improve your content and user experience.

What are user signals?

User signals describe how people interact with search results and websites. It helps to distinguish between two things: behaviour in Google Search and activity on your own site. Google says it uses aggregated, anonymised interaction data to assess the relevance of search results. That does not mean the figures in your analytics reports feed directly into rankings. For your own analysis, these metrics are particularly useful:

click-through rate (CTR)

the bounce rate

time on site

Visitor loyalty is worth looking at, too. Depending on your website and how you measure activity, you might consider the following. These are not automatically established direct ranking factors:

how often visitors return

whether visitors log in

visits from typed URLs and bookmarks

Click-through rate (CTR)

Click-through rate (CTR) is the percentage of impressions that result in a click. If your search result appears 1,000 times and gets 50 clicks, its CTR is 5%. Whether that is good depends on the query, ranking position, device and search results layout. A low CTR is a reason to take a closer look at your listing—not proof of poor content or an impending drop in rankings.

There is no universal minimum CTR that guarantees the top spot. Instead of chasing a fixed percentage, compare similar queries, devices and ranking positions over a meaningful period.

Whether someone clicks also depends on how well your title and snippet match their search. A useful starting point is to refine your title tag and meta description. Only promise what the page actually delivers. Google may choose a different title or text excerpt for its search results.

How to improve click-through rate

Address what the searcher is looking for and give them a clear reason to click.

Use your SEO title to show that the page answers the reader’s question.

Be clear about which searches each page should serve. You have one title tag and one meta description per page, so make them count.

Bounce rate and time on site

Bounce rate and time on site help you understand how people use your website. Their definitions depend on your analytics tool and its settings, so avoid comparing figures measured in different ways.

The bounce rate in GA4 is the percentage of sessions that are not engaged sessions. Under the standard definition, an engaged session lasts longer than ten seconds, includes a key event, or has at least two page or screen views. A high bounce rate therefore does not simply mean “people left after a few seconds”, nor does it prove that your rankings are suffering.

A long visit can suggest interest, but it is not proof of quality on its own. Also check whether visitors complete their task, find an answer or take a useful next step.

How to reduce bounces and encourage engagement

Provide useful, relevant content that answers the searcher’s question.

Use a sidebar to highlight related content, giving visitors a useful reason to explore further.

Do not bury the answer at the end of the page. Readers may leave if they have to work too hard to find it.

For a long article, a table of contents with jump links helps readers go straight to the sections they need.

Tip: Link to relevant further reading when it genuinely helps. The aim is not to stretch out visits artificially, but to answer questions and offer useful next steps.

What can we learn from Rand Fishkin’s click experiments?

Digital marketing expert Rand Fishkin helped shape the debate about user signals through public click experiments. Participants were asked to click particular search results so that changes in the results could be observed.

Experiments like these can offer clues, but they are not controlled evidence of a reliable, lasting ranking tactic. Other influences cannot be ruled out. In particular, they do not establish that longer visits in your analytics reports automatically lead to higher rankings.

Returning visitors

When people come back, it can be a sign that they find your content or service useful. That matters for customer loyalty and business performance, but it does not establish a direct ranking boost. Possible signs of a stronger connection include:

Typed-in visits (when someone enters your URL directly in their browser)

Repeat logins (when visitors sign in to an account on your site)

Bookmarks (when people save your site for later)

How do you give visitors a reason to return?

Start with the basics: Create helpful, original, well-presented content. Keep it up to date and give people a genuine reason to come back.

Our tip: Invest in content that answers your audience’s specific questions. That might mean writing new articles or thoroughly updating existing ones. What matters is genuine value —not simply making a piece sound new.

Where does Google get its data?

It is important to distinguish between where data comes from and how it is used. The fact that data is available does not establish that a particular metric is used as a ranking factor:

Google Analytics

Analytics measures website activity according to your setup and the consent available. Its reports help you analyse your site; they do not show which signals Google uses to rank it.

Google Chrome

Browser data and website analytics are not the same thing. The use of Chrome does not establish a simple ranking boost for logins, bookmarks or longer visits.

Android

The data generated when someone uses Google services depends on the service and its settings, among other things. Using Android does not, by itself, explain how a particular web page is ranked.

Conclusion

User signals help you spot problems and assess improvements. Always consider them alongside search intent, page type and visitors’ goals. A short session may mean someone found an answer immediately. A long one could reflect genuine interest—or difficulty finding what they need.

RankBrain helps Google understand relationships between words and concepts. Its role does not establish that Google uses your analytics metrics directly for rankings. In practice, your priority remains the same: clear answers, relevant content and an easy-to-use website.

Understand website activity with Trackboxx

Trackboxx helps you keep an eye on key website usage metrics, without cookies or the collection and processing of personal data.
