How to measure visibility anyway

A missing click once looked like a missed opportunity. In a zero-click world, however, your content can influence users without anyone visiting your website. So how can you measure that influence?

Welcome to the invisible web

Imagine performing on a stage. The lights come up and the show begins, but you hear no applause. There is no click, session or conversion. Was anyone watching?

That is the zero-click dilemma. Your content may be visible and influential, while conventional analytics records nothing at all.

A zero-click search ends without the user visiting a website because Google or another search engine supplies the answer directly on the results page. Examples include featured snippets, information panels, weather results, translations, calculators and AI-generated summaries. Google Business Profile and Maps results can have the same effect. Users save time, but website owners see no measurable interaction even when their content or brand was visible.

> Read more about zero-click searches

What you can measure — and what you miss

Conventional metrics such as clicks, sessions, time on page and conversion rate cannot capture the full picture. When the answer appears directly in Google, no website visit takes place. Standard analytics therefore misses:

Visibility in featured snippets and AI-generated results

Engagement with elements on the results page

Indirect effects such as later direct visits or branded searches

Zero clicks do not mean zero impact. The impact is simply harder to measure unless you look for the right signals.

Signals of zero-click impact

1. Impressions in Google Search Console

Impressions show how often your content appears, even when nobody clicks. High visibility combined with a low click-through rate is a common zero-click pattern.

2. Growth in branded searches

People often remember the source of a useful answer and search for the brand later. Growth in branded queries can therefore be a strong zero-click signal.

3. Direct visits following search visibility

Someone may notice your snippet, remember it and visit the website directly later. The effect is delayed, but it is still measurable.

4. Engagement on subsequent visits

Deep scrolling or rapid completion of a key action can indicate that visitors already knew what to expect, perhaps because they encountered your content in a search feature first.

5. Social signals and backlinks

Snippets can be shared, quoted and linked to even when the original reader never visited your site. Various Online marketing tools can help uncover those signals.

What can Google Business Profile measure?

Google Business Profile and Search Console provide data on:

✅ Measurable:

Calls from the profile when initiated on a mobile device

Direction requests (for example, tapping ‘Directions’)

Website clicks when the user follows the website link in the profile

Bookings, Appointments or Reservations - when an integrated third-party service such as Booking.com, OpenTable or Calendly is connected

Profile views in Google Search or Maps

Actions following a profile view such as tapping the phone number or ‘Call now’

❌ Not directly measurable:

Whether someone actually booked or purchased except through an integrated booking or commerce system

Time spent viewing the profile

Whether the profile ultimately causes someone to returns or converts because attribution is difficult

New approaches to measurement

To understand zero-click visibility, you need to measure its indirect effects. That means:

Track micro-conversions: scroll depth, button clicks and copy events

Broaden your attribution model: zero-click influence rarely appears in last-click reporting

Monitor the search results: Where does your content appear, and how often?

Does visibility without clicks still have value?

The answer depends on the context, particularly for editorial content and ecommerce.

For content pages visibility in snippets can still build awareness and trust, leading to later direct visits or social engagement. That early exposure becomes valuable when users subsequently look for more detailed information or a relevant offer.

In e-commerce the picture is more nuanced. Product comparisons in Google Shopping, product panels or local listings can reduce visits to individual retailers. Even so, visibility can strengthen brand recognition or niche positioning, while useful guides and reviews may persuade users to return deliberately.

For local service providers — from hairdressers to accountants — strong visibility in Google can generate value without a website click. Users often see opening hours, phone numbers, reviews and directions directly in the results. The information therefore needs to be accurate, complete and consistent with the brand. A well-maintained Google Business Profile can generate calls and visits even when analytics records no click.

Conclusion: zero clicks do not mean a data disaster

Conventional web analytics captures zero-click influence poorly, but other signals can make that visibility measurable. Looking only at clicks means ignoring a large part of the customer journey.

Influence also develops outside the measurable visit. Brands that recognise it gain an advantage over competitors that do not.

Früher war ein fehlender Klick gleichbedeutend mit fehlendem Erfolg.
