Privacy Shield was a data protection agreement between the EU and the United States that, until July 2020, constituted the legal basis for the transfer of personal data from the EU to the United States.

It was supposed to ensure that American companies adhere to a level of data protection comparable to that of the GDPR. The Court of Justice of the European Union approved the agreement in the so-called case "Schrems II ruling" but was invalidated - on the grounds that protection in the United States was not sufficient, particularly against access by American authorities.

Since then, the transfer of personal data to the United States is prohibited. only under certain conditions for example through standard contractual clauses or (since July 2023) the cooperation agreement.
