The dwell time describes the amount of time a user spends actively on a website or subpage - i.e. from accessing the page to leaving it or becoming inactive.
In tools such as Google Analytics 4, the measurement of dwell time is based on the "user_engagement" event, which is automatically triggered as long as the user is active - e.g. scrolling, clicking or has the page open in the foreground. This allows the dwell time can also be measured meaningfullywhen only one page is visitedwithout necessarily having to change sides.
The length of stay is an important indicator in the Website AnalyticsA long dwell time often indicates relevant content or good user guidance. If it is very short, this can indicate a lack of interest, poor usability or technical problems - see also Bounce rate.
Tip: Targeted event tracking (e.g. scroll depth, video views, clicks) can further improve the informative value of the dwell time.
