In data protection, opt-in refers to the Active consent of a user for the processing of its personal data - for example for the setting of cookies, the sending of newsletters or the activation of tracking tools.
According to the GDPR, for many types of data processing - especially in marketing and Website Analytics - a clear, voluntary opt-in is required. This means that no tracking script may be loaded or no non-essential cookie set without active consent, for example.
An effective opt-in must:
- take place actively (e.g. by clicking on a button),
- Be informed (clearly explain what is happening),
- and at any time revocable be.
Typical example: the Display of a cookie bannerwhere the user consents to certain purposes or providers.
