Why Trackboxx will no longer honour Do Not Track signals

(and what this means for you)

1. At a glance

  • New default: Trackboxx will now record page views even when Do Not Track (DNT) is enabled in the browser.
  • More data, the same privacy safeguards: IP addresses are anonymised immediately, no cookies requiring consent are set, and no data is sold to third parties.

2. What exactly is changing?

  • Previously: No tracking when DNT was enabled.
  • From now on: DNT signals will no longer prevent tracking: all visits and interactions will be recorded. This can increase the number of recorded sessions by up to 15% and give you more accurate KPIs.

3. What is Do Not Track?

  • Background: DNT was intended to protect users from cross-site tracking and the sale of their data.
  • How it works: The browser sends a header (DNT: 1). Websites can respond to it, but are not required to do so.
  • Legal position: The GDPR and Germany’s TTDSG do not require websites to honour the signal. Anonymisation and not sharing data are the key factors.

4. Why we will no longer honour DNT

  1. No third-party tracking – Trackboxx uses data solely for your analytics.
  2. Robust anonymisation – IP addresses are truncated before storage, and no cookies are used.
  3. More complete statistics – more sessions provide a stronger basis for conversion rates and A/B tests.

5. Privacy remains central to our design

  • Privacy by default – minimal data collection, no profiling and no sharing of data.
  • Servers located in Germany
  • No consent required – designed for GDPR, TTDSG and ePrivacy compliance without a cookie banner in the default setup.

6. What’s next: custom scripts for specific privacy requirements

We’re working on an option that will let you automatically generate a custom tracking script when adding a new website, if you want to honour DNT signals again. This keeps Trackboxx flexible without compromising its default performance.
