Ad tracking (Google Ads, Meta Ads, etc.)

Table of contents

Trackboxx makes it easy to track your active paid advertising campaigns using its built-in UTM tracking.

UTM tracking attributes clicks from campaigns such as Google Ads and displays them in the “UTM Source” module.

Once configured, you can see the campaign name, ad group and even the keyword that generated the click. To capture this data, you first need to enable UTM tracking in your advertising accounts.

This guide shows you how to set it up for Google Ads and Meta (Facebook) Ads.

Google Ads UTM tracking

Follow these steps to enable UTM tracking for a Google Ads campaign.

1. Sign in to your Google Ads account and open the relevant campaign:

2. At campaign level, select the “Settings” tab.

3. Scroll to the bottom, expand “Additional settings” and open the campaign URL options.

4. Define the UTM parameters

Enter the required values in the tracking template field. You can also use the UTM Builder in your Trackboxx dashboard, which you’ll find under Settings (gear icon).

For more information about creating UTM parameters, see our related article “UTM tracking”

For this example, we use the following template:

{lpurl}?utm_source=Google+Ads&utm_medium=performance-max-kampagne&utm_term={keyword}

The source will appear as “Google Ads”.

The medium will appear as “performance-max-kampagne”.

The final value shows the keyword that generated the click.

The following image shows how this data can appear in Trackboxx:

Meta / Facebook Ads UTM tracking

Follow these steps to enable UTM tracking for a Meta / Facebook Ads campaign.

1. Open Facebook Ads Manager. You’ll see a list of your campaigns. Select the campaign for which you want to enable UTM parameters.

2. Select the relevant ad or create a new one.

In the settings, open “Destination > Website”.

Here you can specify the final destination URL. The “Build a URL parameter” option also lets you create the correct URL directly in Facebook.

You can choose how to name the parameters. Facebook also provides several dynamic parameters that you can use.

In our example, the final URL is:

https://trackboxx.com/?utm_source=Facebook&utm_medium=Banner&utm_campaign=google-analytics-alternativeCode language: JavaScript (javascript)
